Letter from Father Joseph Mazzone

Dear friends,

I pray that your Lent is going well. It’s a beautiful and meaningful time of year, a time for us to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus. It’s a reminder, too, that we are people of the Resurrection, that all of this is leading to the great celebration of Easter. As Christians, we are people of hope. It is in that spirit that I am writing to you, the parishioners of St. Anne’s, today. I am deeply honored to be the pastor of such a wonderful parish. St. Anne’s has been such an integral part of the community for so many decades. Through the church and, for many years, St. Anne School, thousands and thousands of people have been inspired to live out our faith and both Readville and the surrounding communities have been the better for it. I believe that St. Anne’s is not just a community with a great past, however. I believe it also has a vibrant future.

My friends, St. Anne’s stands at both an exciting and critical point in its over 100-year history. Mass attendance continues to rise and we have many social and faith-formation events happening each week. Due to many factors — a temporary drop in attendance during the Covid-19 pandemic among them — St. Anne’s has also been operating at a loss for several years. It had been operating at a loss previous to the pandemic but its financial situation became more challenging during those uncertain times. They have yet to recover. On the following page, you will see a more detailed breakdown of where we stand financially. You will also be able to access a full financial report on our website in the coming week. While this information has been available to you for the last several years — both in the annual financial report, as well as multiple updates throughout the year from our Finance and Operations Director, Tony Domenici — the situation has become more critical in the last few months. St. Anne’s needs to find a way to balance the books, so to speak. I believe this may be done through a variety of ways but your support and participation are crucial to its success.

Please review the following information and complete the survey at the bottom of this page. I am interested to hear your ideas on how St. Anne Parish might be able to create an outside source of income to augment what it brings in through offertory and bequests. I am also interested in creating a Stewardship Committee made up of St. Anne parishioners whose purpose will be to focus in on how St. Anne’s might leverage its assets — its buildings, for example, or its parking lot — to strengthen the parish financially. Finally, I would like all of you to consider how you might become more actively involved as volunteers going forward. Please prayerfully consider how you might be part of building on our wonderful, shared past to help create an exciting future.

May we all go forward with joy, hope and vigor. May God continue to bless our spiritual home and may we all continue to live out Christ’s call to love and serve our neighbor.

Peace,

Fr. Joseph Mazzone

Letter from our Director of Finance and Operations Tony Domenici

St. Anne Parish has approximately $14,400 in cash reserves as of the close of February 2025. And as of this writing, we have also $17,000 in our operating account at Rockland Trust. These two amounts total $31,400 in cash balances for St Anne Parish. The balance reflects a significant drop in savings spanning the past five years.

Our liabilities (amounts owed to others) at St Anne Parish total $178,274. As is typical in collaboratives throughout the Archdiocese, one parish from the collaborative pays the majority of the bills and are reimbursed by the other parish or parishes in the collaborative. In the Catholic Parishes of the Blue Hills, the bills are mostly paid by Most Precious Blood. MPB is then reimbursed by St. Pius X and St. Anne. At this point, St. Anne owes $90,806 to Most Precious Blood. Also included in total liabilities is the $79,199 balance remaining on the Construction Loan (School Roof). The other remaining debt of $8,269 consists of outstanding bills and second collections owed to outside charities.

When comparing the cash balances to the liabilities that have both been described above, we prove that we are currently insolvent (i.e. liabilities are greater than assets). Although alternative means (outside of mass collections & offertory) of increasing revenue exist, we cannot emphasize enough how important it is for the parishioners of St Anne’s to actively participate in our mission. The success of St Anne Parish is not possible without you. For a fuller breakdown of these cash balances, please visit our website or stop by our offices at 20 Como Road for more information. You may also refer to prior financial announcements made by our Dir. Of Finance & Operations beginning in April of 2022, which began to highlight our financial decline post the COVID-19 pandemic. These were printed in the bulletin.

In our attempts to reverse course and regain financial strength, we have embarked upon various initiatives. One of these initiatives includes an Increased Offertory campaign that was launched in October of 2024 and remains ongoing. We consistently focus on increasing our fundraising activities by introducing monthly/weekly ‘spin wheel’ raffles, travel package raffles, Trivia Nights, Purse Bingo Nights, and of course strengthening our famous annual Christmas Bazaar. Lastly, but not least, we are focusing on our collaboration with the Boston Athletic Academy, to help facilitate their mission and expansion as a growing charitable organization, by leasing additional classroom space currently available on the second floor at the St Anne School with the hopes of adding more lease revenue to our income.

We hope that our continued efforts will lead to a strong financial foothold for St Anne Parish. It is also our hope that parishioners will assist us in these efforts so that we continue to serve our vibrant community for decades to come. Thank you

-- Tony Domenici, Director of Finance and Operations
